I took a risk that changed my life.
42 Sundaes Later: The Truth About My First Date with Johnny!
Do you remember your first date with your sweetheart?
Like you, we have a story worth telling. Our magical date happened 42 years ago, and that single evening changed my life.
It was a hot summer day. I was just 15, and he was 18. I took a chance and snuck out to go on a date with “Johnny Sasso.” I told my parents I was going out with friends from work. This was half true; he was a friend from work, but my little brother saw me leaving the house and immediately told my parents.
We went to see the original Karate Kid, then for ice cream sundaes at Brigham’s behind the high school. Guilt got the better of me, and I called my dad from a payphone. He said he couldn’t wait to meet my “friends.” I knew I had two choices: round up some actual friends or bring Johnny home to meet my parents. He told me he wanted to go for it and that he wanted to meet my parents. He was wearing a black leather jacket, dark sunglasses, and he was obviously driving his own car.
I rang my own doorbell for the very first time. There was an interrogation chair set up in the middle of the room, facing my dad. My parents were not pleased with me. However, they liked that Johnny was Italian, Catholic, an altar boy, an Eagle Scout and was going to Tufts University. I was grounded for 2 weeks, but I was at least allowed to date him.
If I hadn’t taken that risk 42 years ago, my life would look very different.
We’ve gone out for sundaes every year since, celebrating our 42nd dating anniversary.
With gratitude and best wishes!

P.S. 42 years, and I’d still sneak out for that date
