I am very proud to be an American of Italian heritage.
“I find other countries have this or this, but Italy is the only one that has it all for me. The culture, the cuisine, the people, the landscape, the history. Just everything to me comes together there.” – Frances Mayes
Monday, October 9th is Columbus Day, a federal holiday in the US, celebrating not only the arrival of Christopher Columbus to the New World in 1492, but also Italian culture and heritage.
Although I‘ve had the good fortune to visit 32 countries, hands down, Italy is my favorite country. Without a doubt, Italy has the best food and wine in the world; on top of that, it also boasts some of the most beautiful churches, frescoes, and sculptures.
Italy is also known for its tourism. Every city and town seems to be picturesque and noteworthy. From the serene gondola rides in Venice to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, there are so many attractions to see—so many unique scenic places to visit—like the Spanish Stairs, the Colosseum, and the breathtaking Vatican, to name just a few sites to see in Rome.
My husband (John) and I think that the Island of Capri is absolutely the most incredible place to visit. Someday we want to go back and see not only Capri, but also the southern region of Italy. We made it from Venice to Pompeii and saw so much during our earlier visit, so I’m confident that we won’t be disappointed regardless of whatever direction we might go.
When you think of Italy, in addition to all of the above, what might come to mind is of its cultural heritage, such as its beautiful language, or its renowned opera. But today, Italy is also known for its fashion and its extremely unique luxury brands.
John and I are both proud Americans with an Italian heritage. All 4 sides of our genealogy stem from Italy. All 4 of my great, great grandparents were born in Italy, and John’s great-grandparents were also all born in Italy, and they came to the States back in the early 1900’s.
John and I traveled through Italy 20 years ago, but I can remember it like it was yesterday. It was our very first international trip together. We fell in love with Europe, and we vowed to travel the world together, and today I have a complete photo album for every country that I have visited.
Although I must say that this summer, our trip to the Greek Islands and Turkey came in at a close 2nd place, I’m really proud to say that for me, Italy remains the #1 country that we’ve had the privilege of touring.
