LESSONS LEARNED FROM MY “MIRACLE CHILD”

The child must know that he is a miracle.  That since the beginning of the world there hasn’t been, and until the end of the world there will not be, another child like him.” —Pablo Casals

Every child is amazing!  Every birth is really a miracle.  As many of you know, I have my very own miracle child. This month I want to share with you, my community, an interview I gave about that very special child to Frank Zaccarri for his podcast, Business Secrets for Walking on Water.

Frank did a whole segment on my son John Robert, called “Miracle Child.”  I shared John Robert’s journey over the past 14 years of his life.  Before he was born, the doctorsgave the fetus a 50% chance making it to birth.  However, I saw it as a 50% chance that the baby would survive.  I’m an optimist and always try to look at the positive side.  It’s so important that you have the right attitude and the proper mindset.  With those two things, I believe you can accomplish anything.

What do I want you to take away from this message?

  1. Anything is possible if you if you have a belief system.  For me it is my faith.
  1. I also believe that God doesn’t give you more than you can handle.

It is very ironic that my husband and I both had a background in cardiology.  In fact, before our son John Robert was born, we ran Radi Medical Systems, Inc.—a cardiology company—taking the company from $0 to $28 million in 5 years.  When our son was born with cardiac defects, we were just happy that he was alive.  We were the right parents for him, and we were blessed with the right child for us.  Our knowledge and our faith had prepared us for his journey.

It’s so important to have the right mindset.  As I mentioned above, I personally focus on the positive things.  I have always been an optimist.  I believed that our child would be a good height and weight.  He was 7lbs. 6oz. and 20” long at birth and he was a month early with his greatly enlarged heart.  The doctors told us that a standard cardiac kid is usually undersized for life.  However, our boy never let his condition and diagnosis stop him from achieving anything.  We believed that he could thrive.  At 14, he is now 5’10” and 128 lbs.  He is in the 95% range for his height.  He’s doing great!

John Robert had two open-heart surgeries that could have impacted his life.  However, he is a fighter, and his last surgery was right after he started Jr. High 3 years ago in August. He was only in Children’s Hospital for 4 short days and was miraculously able to come home that soon.  His recovery was off the charts.

From the start, I believed that although he couldn’t participate in any contact sports, John Robert would find his own niche.  If you raise your kids to believe in themselves, then they don’t let any challenges hold them back:

  • Remember to acknowledge that they have potential.
  • Focus on all the positives and always play to their strengths.

John Robert has certainly found his calling.  At 5 years old he started dancing and drama classes.  Now, a decade later, he has the “trifecta”— he dances, sings, and acts.  He is super-animated when he’s onstage, and to date has taken part in nearly 30 theater performances.  He desires to continue to pursue theater.  It is his dream and his calling.

We are very proud of John Robert and his many accomplishments. He just started Landmark High School this month and has already gotten involved with the Performing Arts Department.  Landmark is a Special Education School that also specializes in dyslexia, so we are pleased that he’s now truly in an environment where he can thrive throughout these next 4 years of high school.

So, that little premature baby that was given 50% chance of survival when I was pregnant with him has really developed into an amazing young man.  If you want to listen to the interview of his story please click on this link:

None of John Robert’s achievements would have been possible without our belief system and our family mindset and prayers and support from others.  He had so many people praying for him for each open heart surgery.  I strongly believe in the power of prayer.
