CELEBRATING OUR FOREVER FRIENDS!

“Longtime friends are family that we choose.” – Patrick Regan

September was Women’s Friendship Month, and after spending a good deal of time last month thinking about my friends—and especially about my many wonderful women friends—I want to share with you my thoughts on the importance of friendship, and how it enriches our lives in so many ways. You can’t pick your relatives, but you can absolutely choose your friends. Do you acknowledge the friends in your life? Do you tell them how special they are to you, or tell them how much they mean to you?

I am blessed to have many forever friends. I wish I could list all of them here, but I’m not even going to try, because I don’t want to miss anyone. Just know that I have a very special relationship with many of my women friends. I value each of these relationships. Did you know that the bonds between girls can grow into women’s friendships, and eventually become forever bonds? Do you have these bonds?

Lisa’s 50th Birthday- Kathy, Lisa, Laura, Amy, Elizabeth, Carolyn and Eleni.

I ‘m dedicating my October Motivational Message to my many close women friends. I want to let each of them know how important they are to me.

While I’ve been blessed to have many of my wonderful friends for many years, here’s one for the record books: one of my closest friends, Kathy, and I have been friends since birth! Our parents were best friends, and they grew up together. Our moms were pregnant together and Kathy and I were born only 3 months apart. We have celebrated every birthday and holiday together for over 5 decades. Do you have a friend like that? Kathy is a very special friend.

My good friend Amy is also one of my dearest life-long friends. When I was 5, she was 4. I met her when she was visiting at my neighbor’s house, and we instantly connected. Growing up, although we lived in different towns, we maintained the bond and have always been very close. When Amy went to UMASS, she joined my sorority- SDT.

My dear friend Laura, who was my best friend throughout junior high, high school and college and she was also my maid-of-honor at my wedding. She has really been there for me through the good times and the bad for the last 40 years. Do you have a Laura in your life? I am very lucky to have one. Her birthday is this week, and I will try to make it special.

I also want to acknowledge my life friend Elizabeth. We met in homeroom the first day of high school, and 37 years later we are still good friends to this day. Are you still close with friends from high school? Do you look forward to going to your high school reunions?

For 33 years, I’ve also remained very close friends with many of my sorority sisters. Sisters are friends for life! I am still close with my dear friends Susan, Roxanne, Laura, Dawn, Julie, Nadine, Martine, Angela, Robin, Elizabeth, Jen, and Gail.

I also want to recognize some other dear friends like Debbie, Marie, Sara, Cheryl, Eleni, Carolyn, Diane, Joyce, Carol and Becky, and anyone else that I might have accidentally missed. I tried to stay focused on the fall birthdays, because ironically that is when the majority of my friends were born. I have also been friends with these lovely ladies for decades. I am so fortunate to have these special friends.

As you can see, I value all of my friendships, and I hope you value yours, too. I treasure each and every one of them, and I always marvel at what happens when I just decide to call an old friend and it’s like time stood still—we just pick up from the last conversation we had, never mind how long ago it was.

I want to acknowledge all these friends that have been in my life. I am a better person because of their friendship. I want all my friends to know how special they are and how much they mean to me.

An important takeaway from this month’s Motivational Message is this: Please remember to value all of your friends. Spend some time and take action: pick up the phone, write out a card or write them an email or even a text. Small gestures really do mean a lot. My mom always remembered everybody’s birthday and I honor her by remembering all of my special friends.

Again, if you want to make someone’s day, just pick up the phone.

Friends are special! Treasure each and every one of them

With gratitude and best wishes!
